Language Requirement for BAA Admission

For admission to the BAA, students have a variety of ways to demonstrate basic proficiency in the language of emphasis. 

• Degree completed in the language of emphasis (Either a degree in the language specifically or an advanced degree where the language was used as the medium of instruction).
• Credential in the language of emphasis.
• Test scores indicating proficiency in the language of emphasis.
  • Passing CSET LOTE score on subtest III in the language of emphasis. 
  • A minimum score of Intermediate High on the Avánt.
• For Spanish, additional options include
  
  • Certificado de bachillerato o diploma de preparatoria (successful completion of the final 3 years of high school in Spanish)
  • California State Seal of Biliteracy (Spanish/English) from College or High School.
  • A minimum score of 3 on SDSU Spanish examination.
  • A score of B2, C1 or C2 on DELE (Diplomas de Español como lengua extranjera) test. 
•  If you do not have other documentation of language proficiency, attach a writing sample and a video (or a link to a video) in the Language of Emphasis (e.g. Spanish or other language) to your program application. There is not a special section for these, just attach them.
  • For the two-minute video, respond to at least two of the questions from the bilingual video requirements page. 
  • For the writing samples, write a two-page, double-spaced, autobiographical essay in 12 point including
    • Personal information relative to your birthplace, elementary schooling, interests, hobbies, etc.
    • Experiences you have had with emergent bi/multilingual school-aged children that have helped you gain insight into multilingual childhood growth and development and into school procedures and operations. 
    • Reasons why you are interested in teaching bilingually and why you have the potential for becoming an excellent dual language or bilingual teacher.
